Kurt Merriweather - Grow Your Venture

Kurt Merriweather has worked in the intersection of business, marketing and technology for over 20 years.  To satisfy his passion to be an entrepreneur, he founded Fitwell Training Solutions in 2003 with his wife Valerie, meeting the needs of personal training clients throughout the Washington DC area.  He is also the proud father of 4 children – Kayla, Miles, Ellis and Reese.  Kurt has consulted with several small businesses and startups across the country, most notably Three Keys Music and FLO Brands owned by Marcus Johnson, internationally renowned and Billboard-ranked jazz pianist.

Kurt is currently a business development and operations executive at Discovery Communications.  He serves as Director, Strategy and Emerging Business Development.  Kurt is a founding member of Discovery’s recently formed Emerging Business Group (EBG).  Discovery’s EBG is part think tank, part product and partnership development group with the objective of delighting Discovery audiences across platforms (video, mobile, social media).   Kurt leads efforts to identify and incubate new business opportunities that leverage new audiences, new products and new business models.  Prior to joining the Emerging Business team, Kurt led strategy and commercial partnerships across Discovery’s online, social media and mobile properties.  He was instrumental in sourcing and closing the acquisition of Revision3 and the Company’s recent investment in Lumosity.  Kurt also nurtured partnerships launch Social TV experiences and grow audiences for Discovery’s web properties.  He developed business plans to successfully launch Discovery News and TLC Cooking web properties. He also led digital media team participation in the acquisition of HowStuffWorks, the largest digital media transaction in Company history.

Before joining Discovery in January 2007, Kurt was Business Director for AOL Music Now and was responsible for AOL’s premium music business operations.  He joined AOL in 2004 to lead product management for AOL’s anti-virus services.  Kurt joined AOL Digital Services in 2005 and was instrumental in defining AOL’s video search strategy.  He has held a variety of product marketing and product management positions at Silicon Graphics, Digital Island and Cable & Wireless.
